Mission

The University of Kansas Osher Lifelong Learning Institute provides intellectually engaging and enriching classes and events solely for the joy of learning to diverse communities of lifelong learners, with a focus on those 50 years of age and older.

Background & History

Since our inaugural season in the fall of 2004, we will have offered 86 courses to more than 2,000 registered participants at 20 venues in Lawrence, Topeka, and Overland Park, Kansas, and Kansas City and Lee’s Summit, Missouri by the spring of 2007. Three formal partnerships have been developed and successfully sustained with residential retirement communities in Kansas and Missouri. Additional Osher Lifelong Learning sponsorships have been created with museums, art organizations, libraries, a private foundation, higher education institutions including community colleges, and many other community organizations.

The University of Kansas is one of 119 sites in 48 states that have been selected by the Bernard Osher Foundation of San Francisco to become a member of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute since its beginning in 2002. In December 2007, the Osher Foundation recognized the quality work by KU’s Osher Institute and awarded KU one million dollars to be endowed in support of the Institute’s ongoing work. This award recognizes the number of persons served and the quality of the programs offered.
