Professor Crawford was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was raised in Lewes, Delaware, a small Atlantic coast resort at the mouth of the Delaware Bay. Interested initially in studying the law, he declared a major in Religion and Philosophy soon after enrolling in college. Since then, Professor Crawford has been engaged, first as a student then as professional scholar and teacher, in the academic study of religion, concentrating especially on early Christian religion and literature.
Professor Crawford's primary area of interest is in Christian origins, with special emphasis on the formation and development of early images of Jesus. He has published numerous articles and book reviews in major professional journals and chapters in books of collected scholarly essays. He is currently Co-Chair of the Society of Biblical Literature's Consultation on Redescribing Christian Origins.
Before coming to Washburn, Professor Crawford held positions at the University of the South, in Sewanee, Tennessee, and at the University of Iowa, where he served as Visiting Assistant Professor of New Testament Studies.
